Best Performance, excluding 2007
I think my best performance excluding 2007 was winning the Formula BMW UK Championship in 2006. I started my winning ways at Mondello Park in Ireland , where I took my first double victory in front of my ‘home' crowd. I was quickly rewarded for that performance with the Motorsport Ireland Young Driver of the Month for April, automatically qualifying Niall for the Dunlop Young
Driver of the Year. I produced another pair of ‘doubles' at the fast Thruxton Circuit and then again at Croft before taking further wins at Donington Park, Snetterton and Silverstone. In total I was on the podium 16 times and finished the season with a commanding points tally of 304, 93 points ahead of former McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year, Oliver Turvey. I claimed the prestigious Formula BMW UK title and with it the Carlin Motorsport test drive in Formula 3. I also have the honour of being the most successful driver in the history of the Formula BMW UK Championship by taking nine wins in one season thus eclipsing the record of six wins in one season, established by Sam Bird in 2005 who is my current team mate in Formula 3.
Best Performance During 2007
II think my best performance during 2007 was at Snetterton when I qualified 2 nd and converted this front row grid slot into my first British Formula 3 race win.
At the start of the 30-minute race, I made a brilliant start and was in the lead by the end of the pit lane. From there I kept my cool throughout, despite being pressurised by Carlin team mates, Sam Bird and Alberto Valerio. As I began lapping back-markers with about six laps to go, Sam Bird pulled alongside me at one point, but I maintained my line, out-braked Sam and stayed ahead to the finish, leading my team mates Sam Bird and Alberto Valerio to a magnificent 1-2-3 for Carlin Motorsport at the end of the 28-lap event.
What is your ultimate ambition in Motorsport?
My ultimate ambition in motorsport is to be the first Irish Formula 1 World Champion and to represent Ireland in the near future in A1 Grand Prix.
How do you intend realising this ambition?
I have always succeeded at all levels and have been a regular winner in karting , a podium finisher in my first season of car racing and a championship winner in just my second season of car racing. However to realise my ambition sponsorship is essential to further my career. I am prepared and do sacrifice many things and will continue to do so to realise my ambition.
Plans for 2008
I plan to compete successfully in Formula 3 Euroseries with Manor Motorsport.
